The city of Kabale in Uganda On August 31, 2023, security personnel in Kabale District prevented Robert Kyagulanyi, the leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), from entering Kabale Town with his convoy.
Security at the NSSF offices in Kigongi Central Division intercepted and blocked Kyagulanyi, who arrived in Kabale Municipality at around 11:30am. The convoy was told to use the Makanga road by the security forces, who were commanded by the Kigezi Region Police SSP Hajj Saiga Ibrahim and the Kigezi sub-region Field Force Unit Commander Hennery Kisembo. However, this did not sit well with the fans, who had preferred that their president pass through the town.
After more than 30 minutes of the stalemate, Kyagulanyi drove away from the convoy and his vehicle, exiting through Makanga Hill to reach the Skyline Hotel. After that, he went to Eso Park in Central Division, where he was hosting a chat program on radio station 103.7 FM.
At the playground of Kabale Primary School, Kyagulanyi was also supposed to speak to the public, but according to sources, security had earlier interfered with the venue’s preparations.
The police have not yet provided an explanation for why they are obstructing Kyagulanyi’s convoy. The action was perceived as a means of preventing him from speaking with his followers in Kabale, though.
Kyagulanyi, who frequently criticizes the administration, has been detained on suspicion of treason and inciting unrest. He is currently being tried in a military court for allegedly possessing firearms without a license.
