A man in Iganga has been sentenced to 52 years in prison by the High Court for the murder of a five-year-old boy in a ritual sacrifice.
Justice David Batema handed down the sentence to Hassan Kafudde, along with Issa Muyita, the father of the deceased, who received a 25-year sentence for the killing of Juma Muyita. Juma was a student at Mirembe Junior School in Kawempe in 2017.
Justice Batema emphasized that this verdict should serve as a strong deterrent to potential offenders. Child rights advocates present in court applauded the court’s decision following the ruling.
During a media address, Jackline Okui, the spokesperson for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), expressed approval of the sentence, stating that it would contribute to delivering justice.
She also urged parents to refrain from sacrificing their own children for the sake of gaining wealth, highlighting the prevalence of this practice in the Busoga sub-region.
