Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina addressed rising frustrations over unemployment and systemic inefficiencies, which have sparked recent protests among the youth. Speaking on Citizen TV, Njeri clarified that the current issues cannot be solely attributed to the Kenya Kwanza government.
“I find it hard to understand the youth’s frustration because, factually speaking, the high unemployment rate and system failures we’re witnessing today are not solely the fault of the Kenya Kwanza government,” Maina stated.
She emphasized the need for a national dialogue to address Kenya’s systemic challenges and acknowledged the youth’s demands during the protests, including their rejection of the finance bill and calls for a cabinet reshuffle.
Maina noted President William Ruto’s response to the finance bill and the subsequent cabinet dismissal, suggesting it was an effort to address deeper structural issues.
“We must have an honest conversation. When the youth first protested, they demanded the rejection of the finance bill and later a cabinet reshuffle. The President declined to assent to the bill passed by parliament and instead dismissed the entire cabinet,” Maina explained.
Expressing concern over the protests being potentially exploited for political motives, Maina questioned whether the unrest aims genuinely to hold the government accountable or if there is a hidden agenda to destabilize the administration.
“It seems some individuals have hijacked the Gen Z agenda to push their own narrative. We’ve seen incidents of looting and property destruction. Are the youth demanding accountability or pushing towards anarchy? There appears to be an agenda to overthrow the President,” she remarked.
President Ruto, during his campaign, pledged to tackle unemployment and streamline government services to benefit all Kenyans.
