On July 17, 2024, the Permanent Mission of Eritrea to the United Nations hosted a side event titled “Empowerment for a Brighter and More Sustainable Future: Advancing SDGs 4, 5, and 6 for Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Access to Clean Water and Sanitation.”
The event highlighted Eritrea’s 2nd Voluntary National Report (VNR) on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 6 (Water and Sanitation). This session provided a platform for discussing the interconnections between the 17 SDGs, sharing best practices, and exploring innovative solutions to development challenges.
Mr. Hagos Ahmed, Director of Population and Social Statistics at the National Statistics Office, detailed the VNR preparation process, including stakeholder engagement and data collection. Mr. Samsom Berhane, Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Finance and National Development, outlined the strategies for advancing the SDGs in the remaining years of the agenda.
Presentations included Mr. Mesfin Mehari from the Ministry of Education on SDG 4, Ms. Yohanna Tewolde from the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) on SDG 5, and Mr. Michael Yoseph from the Water Resource Department on SDG 6.
UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea, Ms. Nahla Valji, praised Eritrea’s efforts in advancing the SDGs and the strong partnership with the UN.
The event saw participation from various member states, including officials from the African Union and the UN system. Under-Secretary-General Christian Duarte, Special Advisor on Africa to the Secretary-General, and other attendees congratulated Eritrea on its achievements.
Additionally, Eritrea’s delegation to the UN High-Level Political Forum hosted a virtual seminar with the Eritrean community in Canada, engaging in a dynamic discussion about Eritrea’s development path. The Eritrean Diaspora remains actively involved in supporting the country’s progress.
