President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has voiced concern about how irresponsible media coverage could harm Uganda’s development and international standing. He expressed these concerns during a meeting with government communicators at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi on July 11, 2024.
Accompanied by Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo, Chairperson of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID), President Museveni criticized certain media outlets for distorting facts and creating damaging narratives. He recalled an incident from 1989 when misleading media headlines about the commercialization of milk production caused public outcry and deterred potential investors.
President Museveni emphasized the long-term economic consequences of such irresponsible journalism and supported the formation of a committee to address these issues. Mr. Rwabwogo echoed these concerns, highlighting challenges in improving Uganda’s international image despite efforts to engage with the media positively.
Proposals included centralizing government communications, enhancing response mechanisms to negative news, and training public officials in effective international communication practices. The meeting concluded with a commitment to regular cabinet discussions on enhancing Uganda’s global perception and developing a unified communication strategy to attract and retain investors.
Attendees included Col. Edith Nakalema, head of the State House Investors Protection Unit; Ms. Marcella Karekye, Special Presidential Assistant for Communications; Assistant Commissioner of Police Kituuma Rusoke; Mr. Ofwono Opondo, Executive Director of Uganda Media Centre; and other key officials from various sectors.
