Rwandan President Paul Kagame is expected to secure a fourth term in the upcoming election, facing minimal opposition from two cleared candidates amidst international scrutiny. The election, scheduled for Monday, follows Kagame’s leadership since 2000, a pivotal role in ending the 1994 genocide. While Kagame has been credited with rebuilding Rwanda and establishing it as a regional financial hub, his administration has faced criticism for alleged rights abuses and media restrictions, as well as accusations of backing rebel groups in neighbouring Congo.
Only two challengers, Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party and Philippe Mpayimana, have been approved to run after six others were disqualified. Habineza, optimistic about exceeding his previous 0.48% vote share, emphasizes his party’s parliamentary success, while Mpayimana appeals for new leadership possibilities in his campaign.
The election, which also determines members of Rwanda’s 80-seat lower house of parliament, has over 9 million registered voters. Provisional results are anticipated by July 20, highlighting Rwanda’s democratic process under the scrutiny of global observers amidst ongoing political developments and challenges.
