Ultrabulk Ship Runs Aground and Capsizes on Inhospitable African Coast

Stricken Ultrabulk Vessel Capsizes on South Africa’s West Coast

On July 11, 2024, an Ultrabulk-controlled multipurpose general cargo ship, the Ultra Galaxy (built 2008), met a tragic fate on South Africa’s rugged west coast. The vessel, weighing 13,800 deadweight tons, grounded north of Strandfontein, a small fishing village, as reported by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) late Wednesday.

Photos released by SAMSA depict the Ultra Galaxy capsized onto its starboard side, highlighting the severity of the incident. Salvage efforts are underway, but salvors have expressed grim prospects for the vessel’s recovery.

The incident underscores the challenging conditions navigators face along this unforgiving stretch of African coastline.
