Abel Chelangat and Emily Chebet emerged victorious in the 2024 Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, as the much anticipated event returned to Kasese for its third edition.
Chelangat, who hails from Bukwo, claimed the men’s 42km title with a remarkable time of two hours, 14 minutes and 59 seconds.
He outpaced competitors Julius Ochieng and Allan Ndiema, who finished second and third respectively.

Chelangat, in his debut marathon, was ecstatic about his victory, attributing his success to perseverance and divine guidance.
“The 42km race was incredibly challenging, with tough hills that pushed me to my limits,” Chelangat said after his win.
“There were moments when I struggled, but I dug deep and persevered. I’m thrilled to have made my debut here in Kasese, not only in this beautiful town but also in my first-ever marathon!”
Chelangat revealed that his journey has been inspired by renowned athletes Moses Kipsiro and Solomon Mutai.
With this victory under his belt, he is eager to reach even greater heights in his running career.
In the women’s category, Emily Chebet clinched the title with a time of two hours, 42 minutes, and eight seconds.
Representing the UPDF club, Chebet overcame a slow start to eventually seize the lead and never looked back.
She outpaced Ruth Cheptoyek and Scarlet Chemos, who finished second and third, respectively.
“Although I started behind, my experience and training kicked in, allowing me to steadily overtake my competitors one by one,” Chebet remarked.
“This victory fuels my ambition to run even better times in the future. I’m eager to see what’s next.”
Both Chelangat and Chebet were rewarded with a prize of Sh10 million each for their outstanding performances.

The runners-up in both categories took home Sh7 million, while the third-place finishers received Sh5 million.
In the 21km races, Abel Chebet and Rebecca Chelangat emerged as the winners.
The event, which saw over 30 countries represented, was a resounding success, according to Andrew Kilonzo, Managing Director of Uganda Breweries Limited, the main sponsor.
Kilonzo praised the improved infrastructure, exceptional security, and the warm hospitality of the people of Kasese.

“The event’s popularity is evident, with hotels in Kasese and Fort Portal fully booked since last week,” Kilonzo noted.
“And with over 30 countries represented, it’s clear that this event has not only brought people together but also boosted local businesses. We’re honored to be a part of it!”
