*Egypt 1-2 Spain
*France 3-1 Morocco (AET)
African sides Morocco and Egypt will compete for the bronze medal in the Olympic men’s soccer tournament after narrowly missing out on the finals.
Morocco faced a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Spain.
Soufiane Rahimi, the tournament’s top scorer, put Morocco ahead with a penalty in the 37th minute.
However, Spain equalized in the 65th minute when Fermin Lopez maneuvered through the defense to score with a left-footed shot.
Juanlu Sanchez, coming off the bench, netted the winner, propelling Spain to their record-equaling fifth Olympic final and silencing the Moroccan supporters at Stade de Marseille.
Meanwhile, Egypt battled hosts France in Lyon in a match that saw the hosts win 3-1 after extra time.
Egypt initially led through Mahmoud Saber’s close-range strike. However, France equalized late in regular time with Jean-Philippe Mateta converting a pass from Michael Olise.
Mateta then put France ahead with a header early in extra time after Omar Fayed’s dismissal for a second yellow card left Egypt with ten men.
Olise sealed the 3-1 victory for France, ensuring a spot in the final for Thierry Henry’s team.
With these results, Spain and France will face off in the final at Parc des Princes on Friday, while Egypt and Morocco will vie for the bronze medal in Nantes on Thursday.
Mali and Guinea were the other African teams participating in this year’s tournament.
