Olympics: Oscar Chelimo Qualifies for 5000m Final

Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo has secured his place in the Men’s 5000m final, set for Saturday.

Chelimo finished fifth in Heat Two with a time of 13:52.46, meeting the requirement for the top eight in each heat to advance to the final.

Chelimo had a slow start, trailing at the back for most of the race, but a powerful sprint in the last 100 meters, running in the outside lane, clinched his spot in the final.

Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the heat with a time of 13:51.59 and is now a strong favorite for the gold medal following the withdrawal of Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo.

Chelimo, the brother of Kiplimo and Victor Kiplangat, previously won bronze in the 5000m at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.

In other news, Tom Dradriga narrowly missed an automatic spot in the 800m semifinals, finishing sixth in Heat Six with a time of 1:46.05, where only the top three advanced. He will have another chance in the Repechage Round.

Winnie Nanyondo’s Paris Olympic journey came to an end after finishing eighth in the Women’s 1500m Repechage with a time of 4:06.35.

Nanyondo had failed to secure an automatic spot to the semis earlier and needed a top-three finish in the Repechage to advance.

Tarsis Orogot and Leonard Chemutai will line up in the 200m semis and 3000m Steeplechase final respectively..
