Uganda Women’s National Basketball team, the Gazelles, secured a hard-fought 80-76 victory against Westmont College in a friendly game on Thursday.

In what was a tightly contested match from start to finish, Westmont took an early lead, ending the first quarter ahead 21-18 and maintaining their advantage with a 42-37 lead at halftime.

The Gazelles trailed for much of the game and entered the fourth quarter down by four points.

However, the Gazelles demonstrated their resilience in the final stretch, clawing their way back to secure the win.

Captain Jane Asinde was instrumental in the comeback, delivering an impressive performance with a game-high 27 points on 9-for-12 shooting, while also pulling down 12 rebounds.

Supporting Asinde’s efforts were UCU star Shakira Nanvubya, who added 12 points, and JKL’s Hope Akello and Lydia Babirye, contributing 13 and 10 points, respectively.

For Westmont, Bailey Fong led the scoring with 23 points, while Sage Kramer chipped in 16 points. Nomie Bariteau and Skyler Knight also made significant contributions with 12 points each.

Despite their sharp shooting from beyond the arc, converting 10 of 22 three-point attempts, Westmont was ultimately undone by 24 turnovers and were out-rebounded 45-39.

This matchup marked the first time the Gazelles and United States’ Westmont have faced off since 2015.

The Gazelles, who recently returned from a training camp in Germany, are now setting their sights on the FIBA Afrobasket Zone Five Qualifiers, which will take place early next year.
