Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, has raised concerns about the limited three-week period allocated by the Electoral Commission for the update of the national voters' register. Amuriat argued that such a brief time frame is inadequate for a task of such significance, stressing that the national voter registration process is essential for ensuring the legitimacy and transparency of the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Amuriat’s comments came in light of the Electoral Commission's recent announcement of the voter register update schedule. According to him, the three-week window is far too short to properly update the register, leaving little room for eligible citizens to register or make necessary corrections to their details. This, he argued, could undermine the credibility of the entire electoral process, which is already under scrutiny from various stakeholders, including political parties and civil society organizations.
The FDC leader further emphasized that the success of the 2026 elections depends heavily on the integrity of the voter register, which serves as the foundation for free and fair elections. He expressed concern that the insufficient time for the register update may lead to inaccuracies or exclusions of voters, particularly in rural areas where awareness and access to registration points might be limited.
Amuriat also hinted at the possibility of forming alliances with other opposition parties to address the issue, noting that their shared concerns regarding the electoral process could pave the way for collective action. He pointed out that if opposition parties unite on this matter, they could increase pressure on the Electoral Commission to extend the update period and ensure a more comprehensive and inclusive process.
The FDC president’s remarks underscore the ongoing tension between opposition parties and the government, as they continue to question the fairness and transparency of Uganda's electoral processes. As the country prepares for the 2026 general elections, all eyes will be on the Electoral Commission’s next steps in addressing these concerns.
