Kisoro Opens New Health Sciences Institute to Address Maternal and Childcare Needs

 

A new Institute of Health Sciences has been launched in Kamony Cell, Kisoro Municipality, Kisoro District, with the aim of improving the training of nurses and midwives. This initiative seeks to meet the growing demand for maternal and childcare services and address gaps in health education, particularly in disease prevention.

The event, which took place on Thursday, was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports, including My Yanin Katende, who represented Dr. Safimah K. Muserme, the Minister of Health Education and Training. Dr. Muserme praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in providing high-quality health education. She emphasized that the establishment of the institute would help train healthcare professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to build a resilient healthcare system that can meet both local and international health challenges.

Dr. Muserme urged the institution's leadership, faculty, and students to adhere to government guidelines and to ensure that the institution remains aligned with the Ministry’s standards. The Ministry of Education and Sports pledged to offer continued technical support to ensure the success of the institute.

Local leaders also expressed their support for the new health institute. The Member of Parliament for Dolumbira, Mr. Alex Seruanda, and the Kisoro District Chairperson, Mr. Abel Beimana, commended Dr. Philemon Masuke for establishing the institution in the region. They noted that it would not only improve healthcare delivery in Kisoro District but also benefit the entire region. Mr. Beimana emphasized the importance of the institute in reducing the burden on families who often have to travel long distances to access healthcare services.

In addition, Mr. Masuke announced a scholarship program that will support 72 students from across Kisoro District, helping to strengthen healthcare in the area.

The opening of the Institute of Health Sciences marks a significant step towards improving healthcare training and services in Kisoro District and beyond.
