Uganda’s Leonard Chemutai has secured his place in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase final at the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris.
Chemutai delivered an impressive performance, finishing second in Heat One with his season’s best time of 8:18.19.
The heat was won by the defending champion from Tokyo, Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali, who clocked in at 8:17.90.
Chemutai’s strong finish, highlighted by that push down the stretch, showed a significant improvement since placing 12th at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
This marks Chemutai’s debut at the Olympic Games, and he is now set to compete for a medal on Wednesday.
It’s strong to note that his namesake Peruth Chemutai (Tokyo Gold medalist) will also be competing in the Women’s 3000m SC final
