Uganda and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed two significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) after President Museveni’s recent four-day visit to the UAE. The agreements, finalized on January 16, will see UAE investments in Uganda’s health and transport sectors.
The first MoU focuses on the construction of the Emirates Eye Hospital in Entebbe. It was signed by Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary, Mr. Vincent Bagire, and UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development Affairs, Sultan Mohammed Al Shamsi.
The second MoU concerns cooperation in the railway and transport sectors, and was signed by Uganda's Attorney General, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, and His Excellency Mohammed Hassan Al Suwaidi, UAE Minister of Investment.
President Museveni’s visit to the UAE from January 14 to 17 was centered around the 4th edition of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, where he also met with Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, the Supreme Council Member of the UAE and ruler of Sharjah. The two leaders discussed several mutual interests, with President Museveni expressing gratitude for UAE’s support in Uganda’s development, particularly the planned international airport near Kidepo Valley National Park. This airport is expected to boost tourism in the region.
The ruler of Sharjah presented a sketch of the Kidepo Airport and praised President Museveni for his role in Uganda’s economic transformation.
In addition to these discussions, President Museveni addressed investors at the Sustainability Week, urging them to invest in Uganda's untapped potential. He highlighted Uganda's economic growth, noting that it is on track to transition from a lower-middle-income country to a high-middle-income nation. He emphasized the importance of value addition in Uganda’s agriculture and mineral sectors, offering a promising market as Africa's population is set to reach 2.5 billion in 25 years, with Uganda’s population projected to grow to 106 million by then.
The agreements reflect strengthened cooperation between Uganda and the UAE in key sectors critical to Uganda’s development
